American Hazelnut (Corylus americana)
American hazelnuts produce tiny flowers and a mature nut between July and October. The tree cross-pollinates by wind and can spread by rhizomes underground.
The trees produce edible nuts also treasured by squirrels, turkeys, woodpeckers, deer, and other wildlife. The tree also provides a staple food to the ruffed grouse. Hazelnuts are an increasingly popular crop in both backyards and large farms.
