Description

Description: This mini workshop is a dip into a range of plants right outside your doorstep that make wonderful allies in basketweaving. It also serves as a fun introduction to the early first steps of making a stake and strand style basket.  We’ll incorporate locally foraged leaves, vines, woodies, and more into a growing circular basket base of reed or willow through twining.  You’ll leave with at least one finished base that you can use as your very own unique coaster or add a hook for a quirky ecological wall decoration.

We’ll discuss how to forage, harvest, and process a wide range of plants that make wonderful allies in basket weaving and a host of tips on how to  access these plant allies, whether you live on 20 acres or even the 5th floor of an apartment complex with no yard.  We’ll also chat about how basket bases like the ones we’re making could be expanded upon/”staked up” to make baskets or even adapted as-is with the same techniques to make large trays for drying herbs.

This class is well-suited for beginners and intermediate weavers, ages 12+ (however, caregivers may be able bring along younger children to accompany them and assist with their weaving project without need of extra tickets if we have the space. Email hickorynutfarmstead@gmail.com to check and be sure we have room!)

When: August 18th, 2024, from 10 am to 12 pm
Where: Bloodroot Herb Shop, 208 W Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Price includes a $25 ticket and a flat $5 material fee.  If this is outside your price range,  please email me! I have two discounted tickets available.

NO REFUNDS unless Bloodroot Herb Shop or Hickory Nut Farmstead cancels the event. However, I am happy to try and assist you in finding someone to take your ticket if you send me an email.  Note also that we have  a minimal enrollment set for the class.  If we do not reach that enrollment, we will cancel and refund all tickets.

We’ll have all the materials and tools you need.  We’ll take a lunch break though, so consider bringing along a sack lunch to eat in the workshop (or there are some walkable food options downtown)

Select “pick up” at checkout, but note there’s no need to come out here.  We’ll email you the class details!

Note:  Access to the classroom requires descending a staircase.  If you are interested in weaving but this presents a barrier to you, let’s chat about a future similar class in a more accessible location.  Please reach out and email hickorynutfarmstead@gmail.com.
